ASUU Strike: Lecturers’ demands capable of hindering varsity education says Senator

The Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Prof Sola Adeyeye, on Monday said that most of the requests of the members of the striking  Academic Staff Union of Universities as contained in the controversial 2009 agreement with the Federal Government were unrealistic.

He said the requests, if granted, could hamper the development of university education in the country.

Adeyeye, who was a lecturer for about four decades before he joined politics, said most of the university lecturers were apparently not aware of what operated in the western world.

Adeyeye, a professor of Molecular Biology,  told journalists in Abuja that in the United States of America for instance, most of the institutions were flexible in terms of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.

He spoke while reacting to a statement credited to the chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of  ASUU,  Dr.  Segun Ajiboye, who condemned Adeyeye’s contribution on the floor of the senate on the issue.

Ajiboye had said, “Having enjoyed good salary and benefits as a lecturer abroad, the senator was indifferent to the rot in the Nigerian universities.”

But Adeyeye, said, “I was bemused by the reference by ASUU spokesman, Dr. Ajiboye, to my enjoyment of Duquesne University’s reputed Flex Benefits for its members of academic and non-academic staff while denying similar benefits to ASUU members.

“First, in most instances, as its very name suggests, the Flex Benefits Programme at Duquesne was flexible. It was also contributory. The university simply matched up to a predetermined ratio, whatever amount had been contributed by the staff.

According to him, there are five universities within a four-mile radius of Duquesne University and each of the institutions has salary, wages and benefits structure that are unique to its own institution.

This, he said, was quite different from the Nigerian situation where he noted that” ASUU wanted a retention of the rigid system whereby a Professor of Engineering at the University of Lagos enjoyed similar salary structure as a Professor of Religious Study at Ibadan and a Professor of History at Ile-Ife.”

Adeyeye also faulted Ajiboye’s assertion that he had his own (Adeyeye’s)children educated in the USA, while not caring for the children of ordinary Nigerians who were being made to bear the grunts of  the rots in the nation’s tertiary education sector.

“Dr. Ajiboye erroneously, and perhaps deliberately and mischievously, sneered that as a senator, I sent my own children to be educated in the USA. All my children had either graduated or had been admitted into a university between September, 1980, when I left Nigeria and 2002, when I finally returned to the country.”

Immigration’s money-for-employment policy in order –Minister

Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, on Monday described those faulting the decision of the Nigeria Immigration Service to charge each job applicant N1,000 as lacking in understanding of the service’s workings.

The minister who spoke with State House correspondents described the criticisms as “misplaced and misguided.”

He said his ministry was fair to the applicants because some other agencies charge as much as N2,000 to access their recruitment portals unlike that of the NIS that charges only N1, 000.

Moro added that the ministry  followed  due  process by consulting with the Federal Character Commission and other government agencies that were engaged in similar exercises before arriving at the cost.

He said, “Maybe for the umpteenth time, I will let you know that some of these criticisms are misplaced, misguided and borne out of misinformation and clear lack of understanding of the situation in the Nigerian Immigration Service.

“I have promised Nigerians that in the face of the controversy that trailed the last immigration exercise of recruitment that we are going to enthrone a more transparent and cost effective system. This is what we have done.

“What we have done has passed through the processes that are required to engage an external consultant in processing the applications of these intending recruits and of course you know that from time on a monthly basis the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Navy have been engaged in this e-recruitment portal and I don’t see anything that is exceptional in the situation in the Nigerian Immigration Service.

“I want Nigerians to know that today the Army recruits, the Air Force recruits, the Navy recruits, the Police recruits, virtually on a monthly basis and they charge token amount of money for portals.

“I want Nigerians also to crosscheck the amount of money that is paid by other agencies to access these portals which is a minimum of N2, 000.”

Ronaldo accuses Blatter of Messi bias

Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Sepp Blatter of institutional favouritism after the Fifa president revealed he preferred Lionel Messi over the Portuguese.

In a debate at the Oxford Union, the 77-year-old claimed “one spends more time at the hairdressers than the other” in reference to Ronaldo, before saying he preferred Messi, as well as describing him as a “kind man and a good boy”.

The comments have resulted in Real Madrid writing to Fifa to call for Blatter to apologise over the remarks, with Ronaldo now giving his own personal reaction.

Ronaldo posted a video of the Swiss making fun of him alongside his own statement on both his Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The 28-year-old said: “This video shows the respect and consideration that Fifa has for me, my club and my country. Much is explained now.

“I wish Mr. Blatter health and a long life, with the certainty that he’ll continue to witness the successes of his favourite teams and players.”

Ronaldo and Messi were both named on a 23-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or on Tuesday.

U17: Eaglets cruise into quarterfinal

Garba Manu’s boys have secured a place in the last eight of the Fifa U17 World Cup after a comprehensive victory over Ali Doustimehr’s side

Nigeria defeated Iran 4-1 to book a place in the quarter finals of the Fifa U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday evening.

First half goals from Samuel Okon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Muhammed and a second half strike from Musa Yahaya ensured the red-hot Africans caged the boastful Persians at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain city.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s thunderous strike outside the west Asians’ penalty area which almost sailed into the net as early as the 30th second sent a stern warning of the Eaglets’ quest for a place in the next round of the championship.

Playing before the cheerful Nigerian supporters made the Iranians look uncomfortable as they were thoroughly outplayed by the Nigerian whose deft touches and blistering skills were beauty to behold.

Constant pressure from the Golden Eaglets however paid off in the 23rd minute as they got the well deserved lead through an unlikely source – Samuel Okon. The Greater Tomorrow Academy defender buried the ball into the net after getting a sublime pass from Yahaya who displaced two onrushing defenders- Komeil Haghzadeh and Sasan Jafari .

Three minutes later, Awoniyi set up Kelechi Iheanacho for the second goal after mesmerising the opponents’ backline. Iheanacho was however substituted few minutes later for Chidera Ezeh after signaling to the technical crew for a change no thanks to injury.

Musa Muhammed ensured the absence of Nigeria’s no 10 was not felt as he slotted in the third goal of the match- his second in the competition. He capitalised on a defensive error from Jafari to thwart the opponent’s ambition of attempting a comeback.

In firm control, the Eaglets were looking dangerous on the counter-attack. Their game-plan was clear and totally effective: allow the Asians to advance into attack and hit them on the break.  Jafari was in trouble again when he tried to intercept Akinjide Idowu’s pass. The ball fell to Awoniyi whose effort was saved by goalkeeper Mahdi Amini.

Musa Yahaya got the third goal with 30 yard strike that gave Amini no chance. The Asians rallied as the game faded toward full-time, and they grabbed the consolation through Ali Gholizadeh who profited from a moment of careless from the Nigerian defence.

While Iran return home with heads bowed low, three-time champions Nigeria look ahead of a quarter-final against Uruguay, who defeated Slovakia earlier in the day.

ASUU: FG rejects intervention by Shagari, Obasanjo, others

The Federal Government has rejected the suggestion to involve past Presidents/Heads of States, governors and traditional rulers in its current face-off with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

National President of Nigerian Union of Teachers, Michael Olukoya, had after a palliative meeting with the Minister of Education, Nyeson Wike; and the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, in Abuja offered the suggestion.

The suggestion came to the heels of recent treats by the NUT to embark on sympathy strike with ASUU, if government failed to resolve the crisis.

Although Wike told journalists that the advice would be looked into but investigations by our correspondent revealed that the government’s team had not considered heeding the advice almost four weeks after it was given.

Our correspondent also learnt on Monday that the NUT had been taking submission from its state executives on the modalities and strategies to adopt in their sympathy strike with ASUU.

A government source who spoke to our correspondent in confidence said, “The Federal Government team is strong enough to broker peace with ASUU. There is no need in involving other persons not in government in the discussion when we are already achieving progress”.

Asked why the government made commitment to the NUT when it was suggested, the source reply, “There was no commitment anywhere. It was a meeting where stakeholders express their desire to move the sector forward. So it was out of mutual respect that both parties spoke.”

When contacted on whether the government has taken steps to involve the past leaders as promised, Special Assistant (Media) to Wike, Simeon Nwakaudu said, “ I don’t understand what you mean by promise. All I can say is that government is desirous to find a lasting solution. And it is working towards that.”

Olukoya had suggested that given the inability of some committees earlier set up to settle the crisis, the Federal Government should seek the intervention of past presidents, governors, traditional rulers and serving Senators.

He said, “With the way this strike has lingered on for three months, we believe government should explore all modalities to end it. Government should invite past heads of states, speakers, senators , ministers of labour and education and every other stakeholder in the sector to resolve this ugly situation.

“Call powerful voices like traditional leaders to intervene in this strike because our concern as teachers is that as these undergraduates stay at home, they are prone to negative vices and in turn these are the same people that would lead the society in future.”

TRAGIC! Family wiped out as man, wife, only son, dog die in sleep

Tragedy has hit the industrial city of Aba, Abia State where a whole family comprising a man, his wife and their only son as well as their dog passed on in their sleep.

The tragic incident which happened last weekend shook the city and sent tongues wagging on what could have led to the death of a complete family in their sleep after going to bed the previous night all hale and hearty.

Saturday Sun gathered that the head of the household, Boniface Ejiagwu, 58, his wife Rebecca Ejiagwu, 50, and son Chukwudi Ejiagwu, 28, who hailed from Ezi-Owelle Anambra State and lived in their family house at No. 23 Onitsha road, Over Rail, Aba had in the morning of Saturday last week, gone out for their normal daily businesses.

As usual, in the evening, they all came back to their house hale and hearty. It was further gathered that after their return home, the man’s wife prepared food which they ate and after a while, went to bed. That was their last meal on earth as the three members died in their sleep same night.  It was believed that their dog which also died same night must have eaten from the same meal.

The irony of it all was that they died and nobody, not even their neighbours got wind of their death until after four days when their bodies had started decomposing and offensive odour began to ooze out from their room.

It was then that neighbours on Wednesday, reported the incident to the police who after coming to see things themselves, gave order on the request of some family members that the corpses should be taken for burial.

The question police detectives will need to find answer to is ‘What could be responsible for the death of the three family members in such circumstance when they did not put on any generator before going to bed as to say they died of generator fume?’

Nobody was ready to speak about the fate that befell this family while the pressure of close relations on the police to have the corpses released to them for burial without conducting autopsy was said to have compounded the crisis.

There are however insinuations the deceased might have died of food poisoning in their apartment which is commonly referred to as ‘face me I face you’.

The state police command public relations officer, PPRO, Geoffrey Ogbonna could not be reached for comments but a senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they are suspecting the deceased might have died of food poisoning.

“Nobody can say for sure now what killed them, that could have been found out through autopsy but we are suspecting they may have died of food poisoning”, the police officer added.

My grandfather lured me to be a robber, fortified me after my first operation

Kingpin of a notorious robbery gang operating in Ore axis of Ondo State, Sunday Odina has confessed that his late grand father who was a great herbalist encouraged him to robbery.

Odina who has been on the wanted list of the state police command was arrested in his hideout by men of the state Anti Robbery Squad following the arrest of members of his gang by the police

Odina who first opened fire when he sighted SARS operatives had one of his legs battered with police bullets and he was later apprehended and taken to the state CID, Akure

The robbery suspect during a chat with Saturday Sun disclosed that his late grandfather was a great ‘ikuku’ man (herbalist) who used to prepare spiritual protection for armed robbers in his days

According to him, he began to show interest in robbery when his late grand father was using him to assist in burying and exhuming arms used by some robbery gangs

He added that “from there I started gathering experience and later joined a robbery gang when I dropped from SS1 after the death of my grand father.”

Odina who claimed he lost his parents at a tender age of ten said his late grand father also taught him traditional medicine on how to escape arrest through invisible means

His words “My grand father was a great Ikuku man and he used to work for young armed bandits when he was alive and he encouraged me to be assisting those guys to be carrying arms to the bush where they used to hide them.

“It got to a stage when i was following members of a robbery gang to operation and i remembered my old man fortified me more when I got home and I told him i followed the gang to rob a house in a village near Onicha-Ugbo

“He even taught me many traditional medicine that could assist in robbery operation but when he died some years back and there was no means of going to school again i joined the robbery business fully and after operating in Onitsha for a while , I left the city for Lagos and after a while i moved down to Ondo and Edo areas before my gang ran to a police patrol van in Ore.”

On why the juju failed him, Odina said his boys went contrary to what the oracle said.

“That day when we consulted oracle, the oracle said we should not go for the operation but my boys who first agreed with me later went for the operation without my knowledge and they were arrested that day during the operation” , he stated. He said he attempted to disappear into the air when he saw the police but the juju failed him stressing “ I don’t know what happened”

Ondo State police spokesman, Wole Ogodo who confirmed the story said the command is battle ready to flush out all criminals in the state. He added that the command’s latest strategies were designed to reduce crime rate in the state to the barest level.

Fifa U17: The Golden Eaglets Beats Iraq to progress

The Golden Eaglets crushed Muwafaq Adlool’s side to secure a place in the knock out round of the Fifa U17 Championship in the United Arab Emirates

Nigeria returned to winning ways as they brushed aside debutants Iraq 5-0 in their last group game played at the Iraq Al Rashid Stadium in Dubai.

Manu Garba’s team put up an impressive showing after surviving the Scandinavian scare in their last game to shoot into the lead as early as the third minute courtesy of Musa Muhammed’s well placed penalty kick after Musa Yahaya was fouled in the penalty area of the sians.

Chidiebere Nwakili doubled the lead 17 seconds later after scoring off a rebound from goalkeeper Hayder Mohammed who blocked a goal bound shot from the Eaglets captain, Muhammed. The rout continued in the 17th minute with Musa Yahaya getting his first of the afternoon with a cool finish after displacing the Iraqi backline.

Sensing imminent danger ahead, coach Adlool made an early substitution – bringing on Yasir Ammar for Al Talaba SC defence stalwart, Mustapha Mohammed. This change paid off as the Iraqis kept the Nigerians within their own half.

The Asians had their best chance of the game in the 33rd minute but Dele Alampasu was up to the task as he made a double save to deny Sajjad Hussein of a goal.

Yahaya got his second of the night in the 41st minute after his header off a corner kick that left the opponent’s goalie with no chance.

On resumption of the second half, the Asians looked more composed and could have scored at least two goals but for the heroics of Alampasu who thwarted every goal scoring effort of the Bashar Resan inspired attack.

Awoniyi was a key reason why the Eaglets could not add to their goal tally as he lost key chances- one of which was a clear cut opportunity in the 66th minute when he blasted wide his shot over the cross bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

When it looked like the game was going to end without any more goals, second half substitute Chigozie Obasi added the fifth with a screamer in the 90th minute after the Iraqi failed to clear their defence line.

With this result, Nigeria top Group F of the championship and will now play Group E’s runners up in the second round to be played on October 29 at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain.

Police withdraw Amaechi’s aide’s security

It was like a movie scene as 15 policemen, in a command-like fashion, invaded the official residence of Chief Tony Okocha, the Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, to effect the withdrawal of his security men.

They claimed to be acting on the orders of Police Commissioner Mbu Joseph Mbu.

Mbu and the state government have been at loggerheads as a result of which even the national assembly has authorised Inspector General of police Mohammed Abubakar to redeploy him. But he has declined.

The two policemen attached to Okocha’s residence opposite the Rivers State Government House were withdrawn. The invading policemen created a scene in the process, claiming they were under instruction to also withdrawn policemen on escort and guard duties with Okocha and the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), George Feyii.

It was learnt that when the 15 policemen got to Okocha’s official residence, they kept banging the gate, holding everybody in the expansive premises hostage, in a war-like situation.

The private security men and the two policemen being withdrawn initially thought they were to be killed and refused the invading policemen access to the building.

In the confusion, the security personnel on guard duty at Okocha’s official residence moved to a safe point in the compound, which made it impossible for the main gate to be immediately opened.

Okocha said last night: “The Special Protection Unit (SPU) of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State assigned some policemen to my official residence and for escort, but Mbu has withdrawn them and those with the SSG. We are left with only one orderly each.

“No reason was given for the withdrawal of the policemen. Before the withdrawal, I had three policemen on escort duty and two policemen at my official residence. The two policemen alternated day and night.

“My life is in danger. If anything goes wrong, Mbu should be held responsible. He does not pick my calls.

“There was pandemonium when the invading policemen got to my official residence and they held everybody to ransom. One of the private security men later opened the gate.”

The police signal of 9:55 am of October 24, 2013 (yesterday), from the SPU, which was obtained by The Nation, had as reference number: CB/4001/B/Dept/SPU/Base 6 Rivers/Vol 1/149.

Copies of the signal were sent to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 6, Calabar; Compol, SPU; SSQ, Abuja and the Compol B Ops.

The signal, titled: Orders and Directives, read in part: “You are directed to withdrawal all Special Protection Unit personnel posted on escort /guard duties attached to the Secretary to the Rivers State Government and the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, leaving only an orderly each, with immediate effect. Ensure strict compliance please.”

No name was indicated on the signal, which bore “SPU Base 6, Port Harcourt.”

Rivers Police Spokesman Ahmad Muhammad was not available for comment.

OOU GENERATES OVER N2.4BN IN SIX MONTHS

The Olabisi Onabanjo University, (OOU) Ago-Iwoye has generated over N2.4bn between January and June this year, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Saburi Adesanya has revealed.

The amount represents 92% of the institution’s targeted revenue as contained in its 2013 budget.

Prof. Adesanya represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sule Odu made this known yesterday when members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology visited the institution in continuation of their oversight function on budget performance monitoring.

The Vice- Chancellor gave the breakdown of the revenue to be N1.7bn realised from school fee charges, N23.2m from acceptance fee, N16.1m as government subvention while the balance of N657.2m was realised from other sources.

Prof Adesanya indicated that records show that OOU has 12, 045 students and had been given matriculation numbers, clarifying that those without matriculation numbers and records were not bonafide students.

Responding, the Committee Chairman, Hon, Adeyinka Mafe lauded management of the institution for achieving 92% of its budget within six months, advising it to always keep his committee abreast of developments in order to render assistance whenever the need arises.

The Committee also visited the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), where its Vice Chancellor, Pro Oluyemisi Obilade disclosed that it has achieved 100% accreditation of its all degree programmes.

Pro Obilade also indicated that the institution had equally achieved full implementation of Point of Sales System (POS) of the cashless programme embraced by the State Government.

UPDATE: Eaglets survive Swedish scare

Sweden 3 – 3 Nigeria Berisha 11’, 19’ Halvadzic 65’ Isaac 22’ Yahaya 48’ Awoniyi 81’

The Golden Eaglets continued their quest for a fourth Fifa U17 Championship trophy in blistering form as they came from two goals down to draw Roland Larsson’s boys.

Nigeria impressive run at the ongoing Fifa U17 World Cup was brought to a halt by Sweden at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on Tuesday evening.

A second half rally by the Garba Manu led side ensure the Eaglets came from two goals down to avoid defeat in the hands of the Larsson coached team.

The much talked about top of the table clash between the Group F sides kicked off on a very competitive note with both teams seeking for an early goal.

Sweden dominated the early stages of the game and could have shot to the lead in the 5th minutes when Elias Anderson raced into the Nigerian defence but captain Musa Muhammed was up to the task by clearing the goal-bound move.

Golden Eaglets first chance of the came two minutes later but Chidera Ezeh could not connect to a sublime pass from Yahaya from the left side of the Swedes’ defence. Sweden however got rewarded for their dominating play in the 10th minute when Valmir Berisha tapped in the first goal for his side after a rather jittery Dele Alampasu who was in goal for the Eaglets rushed out unwisely in a bid to save Erdal Rakip’s header.

Eight minutes later, Berisha got his second after heading in a cross from Anton Saletros that caught the Nigerian defence unawares. The Garba Manu led team then woke up from their slumber and got their first goal in the 21st minute off the boot of Isaac Success who skillfully slamed the ball into the net off Kelechi Iheanacho’s cross.

All efforts for the Eaglets to get the much needed equalizer proved futile as the strong and physically fit Swedes muscled out the Nigerian attackers. Nigeria’s enthusiasm of getting the equalizer died down after Success was replaced by Taiwo Awoniyi following an hamstring injury.

In the closing stages of the first half, Nigeria’s chances of drawing level were thwarted by Sweden’s goalkeeper Mohlin who made crucial saves to deny the Africans.

On resumption of the second half Nigeria invaded the Swedish players defence and were rewarded for their enterprising play in the 48th minutes as the Musa Yahaya’s long range effort sailed into the opponent’s goal post with goalkeeper Sixten Mohlin clearly beaten.

This goal propelled the Eaglets in search of the winner but their efforts were trauncated by their opponent who now relied of counter-attack after packing a bus in their defence. Sweden shot into the lead again in the 65th minutes through substitute Mirza Halvadzic.

The Malmo FF midfielder punished the Nigrerians for their poor defending by slotting the ball into an empty net after the Nigerian defence was fooled by Gustav Engvall’s cross inside the Eaglets penalty area.

Taiwo Awoniyi made it 3-3 with a terrific header in the 81st minute after a well taken cross from Kelechi Iheanacho from the left side of Sweden’s defence.

Nigeria needs a draw in their last group game on October 25 at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai to book a place in the knock out stages.

Why Oduah won’t appear before us now -Senate

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodima, has explained that the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, and heads of agencies under her ministry, did not appear before the senate during its plenary on Tuesday because his committee had yet to invite her.

Uzodima, who spoke with journalists after the plenary, said the Senate on Tuesday, had just approved the votes and proceedings of its sitting on October 8, where the senators unanimously agreed to summon the aviation minister and the heads of agencies under her.

Uzodima said, “With the approval of the votes and proceedings of the last Senate session today (Tuesday), containing the summon on the minister, our committee will now meet within this week to fix the exact date to invite the minister and other relevant aviation chiefs for questioning on the troubled sector.”

On why the Senate was allegedly foot-dragging on the N255m armoured car scandal involving the minister, Uzodima justified the position of his colleagues, who decided not to speak on the issue for now.

He said, “As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, I have read a lot on the alleged scandal in the media and I believe other members of the committee are also up to date on the raging issue.

“However, we cannot jump into the fray of the controversy like that on the strength of media information alone without properly checking our records for facts and figures on whether the alleged vehicles bought were appropriated for, or not by the agencies that purchased them.

“Our appeal to the general public for now is that they should exercise patience on the entire crises bedevilling the aviation sector as the Senate, and in particular its committee on aviation, will surely carry out thorough investigation to unravel all issues behind the whole crises.”

WHY NIGERIAN STUDENTS MUST DEMAND AN END TO THIS ASUU STRIKE NOW!!

EFFECT OF THIS ASUU STRIKE ON STUDENTS AND LECTURERS: THE GAINS AND THE LOSSES TO COME

It is no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike for almost four months now. I have done an empirical analysis of what Nigerian students as well as lecturers will gain and lose as a result of the current struggle. Read, digest and see if we need to support them any longer or not.

GAIN OF LECTURERS

1. Increased allowances for project supervision, call duty, extra hours worked, hazards, etc.
2. Payment of salaries and entitlements for the several months in which they didn’t work!
3. Those schools that did not partake in the struggle e.g UNILORIN and RSUST will also benefit from the infrastructure funds and the earned allowances (needless to say UNILORIN almost began sharing the almost one (1) billion they got for earned allowances last week)

NEGATIVE EFFECT OF THE STRIKE ON LECTURERS

1. Delay in obtaining Masters and PhD’s for those still doing their postgraduate studies.
2. I cant fathom out any. Please, help me if you have been able to think of any other one.

GAINS OF THE STRUGGLE FOR STUDENTS

1. The funds released for infrastructure will be used to meet the immediate needs of our schools. Some will use the funds to construct more hostels, some will use it to equip libraries, provide internet connectivity, build laboratories and furnish them, amongst others. These are projects that will aid learning and ultimately benefit students.
2. Those that will later join the academia and become Professors among us will also have the benefit of retiring at 70 years.
3. Those that will join the academia among us will also enjoy the special allowances that the current struggle will benefit lecturers in the years to come.

NEGATIVE EFFECT OF THIS STRUGGLE FOR STUDENTS.

1. BATTERED ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Our Schools have lost a semester which cannot be made up for. Most schools were either in their second semester of the 2012/2013 session or were rounding up their first semester exams when the strike began. This will result in an abridged semester and most schools will finish their 2012/2013 session in 2014.
What this implies is that those that wrote the 2013 UTME and will be offered admission (most schools have not released their admission list) might not resume until probably March next year (when another UTME will be on the way)
This will inadvertently result in late resumption of the 2013/2014 academic session which is likely to finish early 2015 (provided ASUU does not embark on another strike action before then). Academic calendar is thus in tatters!

2. DELAY IN THE RELEASE OF ADMISSION LIST.
It is pertinent to note that a lot of prospective University students do not know their fate regarding admission as a result of the strike action.

3. LAW STUDENTS CANNOT GO TO LAW SCHOOL TILL NEXT YEAR OCTOBER.

2012/2013 Final year Law students must be cursing down their throats as the strike has barred them from progressing to the Law school this year. When the dust of this strike settles, they will have to wait till next year October before they can go to the Law school. This is not the only problem because Law graduate of next year 2014 might not be able to go to the Law school till 2015. One year wasted!.
One might say two (2) sets will be merged but those in the know-how will tell you that the Law school has a quota for each school. Are we seeing the imminent crises?

4. FIERCE COMPETITION FOR 2014 NYSC BATCH ‘B’.
As a result of this strike action, most public Universities (except probably UNILORIN) cannot present Students for November 2013, BATCH ‘C’ service year and with the look of things, public Universities might not be able to meet up with February 2014 BATCH ‘A’ Service year thus resulting in a fierce competition by students to be mobilised for service next year June BATCH ‘B’. What this means is that some students who were supposed to go for service in 2013 will be deferred to November, 2014 and some till February 2015. Are you calculating the time wasted?

5. SOME PROJECT STUDENTS MIGHT HAVE TO START ALL OVER

2012/2013 Final year students of most schools who were working on their projects (Science-related) when the strike action began might have to start again because the results obtained then might not be tenable again. This results in waste of scarce resources, time and energy.

Having considered the gains and pains of the current struggle, Nigerian Students can now decide if they wish to continue supporting ASUU or reconsider their support. We can decide if the gain of the struggle outweighs the sacrifice we are paying or otherwise.

If strikes could rescue the Nigerian Education system, then our Institutions should by now be one of the best in the world. If ASUU has been on strike for 30 months in the past 10 years and we are still where we are today, then it means No weapon of strike fashioned against the Pharoahs in Abuja can work.

Government has made concessions, we will only be deceiving ourselves if we think Jonathan will implement every bit of that agreement. Its not realistic!..let us be factual and move forward. When ASUU started this struggle, they had popular support not just because it was a Tradition for them to garner sympathy of Nigerians but because we felt it was an aberration for them to still be on an agreement that Government signed in 2009 after an almost four months strike action. But if after a Hundred days of protests, demonstration, rallies and negotiations, we are still at this stage, then it doesnt look like its going to get better. The Truth is ASUU is already losing public sympathy because the collateral effect of their strike is so harsh on students. Remember, in an industrial dispute, you dont win 100%, you win some and concede some ( as corroborated by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Archbishop Kaigama, Tolu Ogunlesi and a host of others).

In my own Opinion, the strike doesnt makes sense any longer and ASUU should just call it off to avoid being termed ‘stubborn fellows’ in the face of the Nigerian Public.

Religious Crisis Brewing In Osun State Over Gov. Aregbesola’s Merger Of Schools

While the storm arising from the planned demolition of Fakunle High School in Oshogbo to make room for the setting up of a Shop Rite Mall has yet not settled, a policy of school reclassification by the Aregbesola administration may be instigating another crisis in Osun State.

In the scheme of school reclassifications announced by the Osun State Government, there are now three schools: the elementary, middle school and high schools.

The purported reclassification formula however, despite informing the demolition of a high school, introduces the merger of most of schools in the State.

Some of the merged schools are faith-based, and their proprietors have publicly declared their disagreement with the merger plan.

One of the Christian denominated Schools, Baptist High School, recently shut its gates against the new students distributed to them upon resumption as a way of expressing its indignation.  The closure was followed by a mild protest with banners and placards, which bore messages of disapproval of the merger policy.

Some of the Christian-denominated schools were basically for same-gender students, but the schools’ say of the merger policy displaces the sanctity of their moral preserves.

In addition to the resistance of the schools to the idea, the Osun State chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on October 7 wrote to the State Government that it totally rejects the plan.

In a letter to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, CAN stressed that the foundation of the Christian faith is threatened by the policy and that its members in the State would not compromise on resisting it.

The correspondence, signed by the Osun State Chairman of CAN, Rev Elisha O. Ogundiya, demanded an immediate stop to the implementation of the merger policy, a reversal of the mixture of both genders in the same-sex schools, and the return of all mission schools to their founders.

The Association gave seven-day ultimatum to the Governor to work on their demands, following which they threatened other actions.

SaharaReporters learned that Fakunle High School, which is to give way for a Shop Rite Mall, although not operated as a Christians-only school, was founded by a Christian missionary, Reverend Pa. Ade Fakunle in 1956, before it was taken over by the Osun State Government in 1975.

The demand by the Osun State CAN that the government return missionary schools to their founders may be informed by the demolition of Fakunle High School, a trend some members who spoke with Saharareporters allege to be imminent for the schools being merged.

“We suspect the merger will neutralize the missionary essence of our schools and the Government will subsequently demolish them. We won’t allow this at all,” said a member of the Baptist Conference in Osun State.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters has also gathered that alumni of the Fakunle High School have hatched a plan to host a massive protest against the planned demolition of the school in Oshogbo, and that proprietors of the merged faith-based schools as well as the State Chapter of CAN may be buying into their demonstration upon the expiration of their ultimatum to the governor.

Canadian writer wins Nobel Prize for Literature

Canadian short story writer Alice Munro has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. In announcing its decision on Thursday, the Swedish Academy called the 82-year-old author a “master of the contemporary short story.”

Munro began writing as a teenager and published many collections of short stories over the decades. She has won numerous literary prizes, including the Governor General’s prize, Canada’s highest literary honor. The Nobel is likely to be the capstone of her career. She said earlier this year that she was “probably not going to write anymore.”

The writer is the 13th woman to win the Literature prize. She said she hoped the award “would make people see the short story as an important art; not just something you played around with until you get a novel written.”

I have never said I am a musician; I am an entertainer — D’banj

Dapo Oyebanji, aka D’banj, speaks with JAYNE AUGOYE about his career and relationship with the popular Nollywood actress

Singer, Dapo Oyebanji, aka D’banj, finally opened up on his love life in a rare meeting with journalists in Lagos on Wednesday.

The self-styled Kokomaster was clearly in his elements as he talked at length, amid occasional bouts of laughter, about his career and other issues that were important to him. One of the subjects was about his rumoured relationship with Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji.

Judging by the manner in which the actress’ name kept popping off his lips, it was obvious that D’banj had a very soft spot for her.

Aware that the grapevine had bristled with the rumour that he was romantically involved with Genevieve, ever since she appeared in the 2010 video of his hit song, ‘Fall in Love’, the singer said the actress had played a role in his success.

“Apart from the fact that she is my friend, she has been a part of my success. There is no way you are going to tell my story that Genevieve’s name will not come up because she featured in my biggest song of all time,Fall in Love. So if E True Story comes to Nigeria to interview me, she will definitely be called upon to tell my story,” he said.

As if to confirm that there was more to his relationship with the actress than he had always admitted, D’banj added, “I would love to have Genevieve as my wife.  We never can tell what God plans for us in the future. I have studied her and I realised that anyone that has her as his woman has found himself a treasure. Just like the Bible says, any man who finds a wife, finds a good thing.”

Perhaps the fans and admirers of the ‘love birds’ will have to brace themselves for a symbolic wedding of two of the most celebrated artistes on this side of the globe in the nearest future.

Meanwhile, D’banj plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his music career anytime in 2014. As expected, the singer aims to roll out the proverbial drums to celebrate in style what he describes as the overwhelming success of his foray into the Nigerian music scene.

The one-time harmonica wielding artiste has, indeed, made tremendous progress in his career since his monster hit, ‘Tongolo’ was released in 2004.

The artiste, who wormed his way into the highly competitive international music market after signing on to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music in 2011, no doubt, has finally found his bearing as an entertainer since he parted ways with Mo’Hits.

“So much has happened in the last 18 months and I am very thankful to God. By the Grace of God, I have remained relevant for nearly a decade in the music industry and I have released hit songs every year. Also, I am glad that I have been chosen to headline the Hennessy Artistry this year. This is one brand that understands the importance of aligning with the entertainment industry.

“My career is barely 10 years old.                But with the success I have achieved so far, it feels like three decades already. Within my first 10 years as a musician, I have recorded the biggest song and shot the most viewed music video of all time, ‘Oliver Twist’. I must say I am humbled and getting ready to take over,” he said.

Without mincing words, D’banj noted that the history of his career and the resulting accomplishments will be incomplete without mentioning his humble beginning with the defunct Mo’Hits Records. The mere mention of his erstwhile colleagues, including Don Jazzy, seemed to awaken nostalgic feelings in him.

“If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am lying. I have spent the better part of my career with him. I was married to him in a way (laughs). So I miss everything about Mo’Hits: the family, the movement, and the vibe of being in the studio with him. I miss the jokes and the arguments, but I have since keyed into the notion that nothing can stop a moving train.

“Nevertheless we can always do music together. The track, ‘Top of the World’ was produced by a Grammy Award Winner. The songs ‘Finally’ and ‘Don’t Tell Me Nonsense’ was produced by my producer while ‘Oliver Twist’ was produced by Don Jazzy. So, why won’t I have him on my 10 years anniversary album?

“I have never said I am a musician; I am an entertainer. Some people say I can pick up a microphone and become a comedian. Therefore nobody should come and ask if I want to go into acting because they should know I am already an actor. It depends on when the right script and concept lands in my hands.

“For now, I am concerned about achieving new things and breaking new grounds. By the time I enter Hollywood, I believe that I’ll become as successful as I have been as a singer. The movie titled ‘I am Banga Lee’, starring Genevieve, to be released in 2014, won’t be a bad idea,” He said.

It seems that the world is at the Kokomaster’s feet. Yet, he is not in denial of the fact that his fans in Nigeria are his greatest assets.

“The Hennessey Artistry Tour afforded me the opportunity to meet my fans here in Nigeria. I have not travelled across the country in a long while because I am abroad all the time. Most of my fans complained that they have not seen me since 2007 and I reallised that I need to be in constant touch with my fans down here.”

~~AFRICA NEVER ASKED FOR YOUR PITY POEM~~

Africa never asked for your pity,
We never asked for your hypocrisy,
Africa never begged you to come in your ships on your voyages of theivery,
Africa never asked for your photographers to take pictures of impoverished kids,
And tell the world of your fabricated version of our story..our history,
Because unlike you would believe, poverty doesn't always equivocate suffering,
And hunger does not always mean starvation,
Africa never asked for your campaigns and your posters in your country,
While you choke and oppress our people who want to be educated and help rise within your veins, your souls,
Painting us as a hopeless place and yourself as a knight in shinning armour,
Coming to rescue us,stealing from us with your inbalanced trade laws,
You are so busy playing the big brother that you are now blocking the sun,
Reaching your left hand out to pull us out of our pit of poverty,
When you hold a ladder in your right arm,
No Africa never asked for your pity,
We never asked to be pitied or looked down upon,
As the example which you use when your people try to sound deep and charitable,
We are Africa and we are strong and we are proud,
We hunger for success and progress like we starve for food,
Africa never asked for your pity.

ASUU strike not political – NLC tells Jonathan

NIGERIA Labour Congress,NLC, yesterday, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to discountenance the impression that ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, was a political action against his government as nothing could be farther from the truth. It then advised the President to tackle the crises in the education sector and prevent a shut-down of the sector.

NLC in a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Omar, told President Jonathan that those telling him that the strike was politically motivated were the President’s enemies who rather than tell him the truth preferred to indulge in sycophancy, hypocrisy and boot-licking.

The statement titled “Do Not Allow Education Sector to Shut-Down”, reads: “The Nigeria Labour Congress calls on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to tackle the crises in the education sector and prevent shut-down of the sector. We urge Mr. President to muster the necessary will and skill to confront the issues that threaten this vital sector.

Asuu cartoon

“As President of the country, he has the onerous task of restoring normalcy to the sector whether the issues are political as he has made the nation to believe or whether they are purely industrial. The threat of a total shut-down is present and immediate and deserves all the urgency and mobilization Mr President could muster. The developments in the Education sector are symptomatic of greater ills in the polity.”

“The strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), for instance is in its fourth month and has almost certainly disrupted an entire academic session with collateral consequences. Also the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has signaled its readiness to embark on a solidarity strike if government fails to resolve within two weeks the issues of contestation with ASUU. Most of these demands if not all, are not new, but are subsisting agreements which government is expected to honour. Some of these agreements border on salaries which government has agreed to pay but has elected to observe in the breach instead. For example the case with the Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities, whose members are being owed for over three months.”

According to the statement “The avoidable strike action by ASUU has caused enough disruption or damage to the sector. The implications for the polity are grave and should be avoided, at least for the sake of our children. We also urge Mr President to discountenance the impression that the strike actions against his government are politically-motivated as nothing could be farther from the truth. Those who pursue this line of thinking are the ones who do not wish Mr President well. Rather than tell him the truth, they prefer to indulge in sycophancy, hypocrisy and boot-licking because it serves their personal motives.

“In order for Mr President to convince himself about the absence of any ulterior motive against his administration by any of the unions, especially ASUU which has come under accusation, we crave the indulgence of Mr President to insist on being availed the details of these agreements.

The Nigeria Labour Congress is not oblivious of the present challenges in the economy but it is convinced that with requisite discipline, will, prioritisation and genuine dialogue, the government can reach a truce not just with the unions but could halt the decline in the economy.”

How I Bleached My Skin To Keep My Hubby–Foluke Daramola

An online report has claimed that popular Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola-Salako has allegedly confessed to have bleached her skin in order to keep her husband from poachers. According to the report, the busty actress allegedly admitted on a television programme monitored by it, to have changed from her former chocolate skin colour to her now-fair complexion skin colour.

“Foluke further confessed that she had to do that because she needed to ‘keep her man’ and added that it is also the special ‘thing’ among Nollywood actresses to do that,” a part of the report said.

Foluke reportedly disclosed this while speaking as a guest on Lagos-based Television Continental (TVC) programme,‘Your View’, anchored by Yeni Kuti, daughter of late Fela Anikulapo, and two other ladies and aired on Friday morning of September 20, 2013.

She was reportedly asked by one of the presenters if she applied something on her skin, which changed her skin colour, and she allegedly affirmed to have applied something to change her skin colour, according to what the online news journal published

Help! I’m going blind gradually –Pa Kasunmu

Nollywood veteran actor Mr. Olukayode Odumosu, nationally renowned by his stage name, Pa Kasunmu, is on the verge of completely losing his sight, memory and mobility due to a debilitating heart disease and partial stroke.

The unfortunate news came to public prominence recently on the social media when his children took to Facebook to make a short appeal to charitable members of the public to help save the financially-challenged actor from the ravages of heart and liver disease- a malaise he has battled with since 2009.

During an exclusive interview with Friday Flavour at his Mushin-Lagos residence, the 60-year-old Pa Kasunmu showed visible signs of ill-health– his barely audible voice trembled and he suffered shortness of breath.

“When the sickness started, it was actually moving towards my kidney, but the doctors in LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) were able to arrest that. Later, I started battling with partial stroke. Now, what I’m trying to prevent is the secondary stroke and apart from that, I’m gradually losing my sight already and I can’t walk well”, Odumosu explained.

Asked why he was coming out at this time to let Nigerians know about this ailment, he said; “My state of health has now reached a chronic stage that I can no longer handle alone, that’s why. I have been with LUTH since 2009 and I have spent a lot of money; over N4 million personally. I have sold two plots of my land and my BMW car. Although I have my family’s support, which I’m happy about, but right now I have no money anymore and my family has also done a lot.

That is why I’m calling on Nigerians to help me”. Pa Kasunmu’s son, Olajide, who corroborated to our reporter his father’s health and financial challenges said the family is doing the best in the situation to help the man overcome emotional depression. “It is difficult seeing the way he is now, but we are doing our best. He is also afflicted by memory loss and in recent times, he gets double vision”.

Regrettably, although he was never an in-patient at LUTH, the actor’s dwindling resources means he can no longer afford the costly, but vital medication and treatment necessary to fight the heart and liver diseases.

“I have never been on admission. I should have been, but I didn’t allow it simply because I can’t stand seeing another human being giving up around me; so I go from home. I have spent lots of money.

There was a time I attended three clinics in a week at LUTH which are ‘cardio’ (cardiology), ‘neuro’ (neurology), ‘uro’ (urology) and my medication in a week cost about N35,000. I was told by the doctors that it’s a lifetime thing and I must be on medication to manage my health. It must be regular and constant in order to prevent the secondary stroke. I was also told I will need a physiotherapist”, he said.

To achieve the goal of managing his health and preventing a secondary stroke, Kasunmu made known that he would require a total sum of N12 million. “I don’t have money anymore; I am only pleading with Nigerians to contribute to my survival to raise the money for my treatment. I promise them that once I am fully recovered, I won’t retire. I love to make people happy and laughing, that is what I love to do”, he assured.

Odumosu also revealed that colleagues in the industry from which he made his fame and fortunes have not given him the support he expected. “None of them have given me assistance since 2009 or since I stopped acting. Nobody checked up on me until when they saw the recent publication on Monday. Jide Kosoko ‘Oriental Kosoko’ reached out to me and Muyiwa Londoner usually put calls through to me as well”.

Born on March 16, 1953 in Odogbolu, Ogun State, Kasunmu studied Business Administration at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos. At the age of 15, he found his calling on stage and carried on his theatre practice until the full advent of the home video industry, Nollywood, in the 90s.

The crossover actor is predominant for his roles in the Yoruba film genre– often times comically portraying a literate, but verbose character; however, he has featured extensively on Super Story, the hit English Language TV drama series, created by Wale Adenuga. Kasunmu’s last public appearance was at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award held in March in Lagos.

‘Ethiopia Can’t Stop Emenike, Moses’

Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Amokachi has backed Super Eagles for victory against Ethiopia in their first leg 2014 World Cup qualifying playoff in Addis Abba on Sunday.

Amokachi believes that the Ethiopians can't withstand the calibre of players Stephen Keshi has invited for the clash.

The return match takes place in Calabar on November 16 and the aggregate winners qualify for Brazil 2014.

Victor Moses converted from the spot twice to help Nigeria beat plucky Ethiopia 2-0 in their group stage match at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on January 29, but the Walya Antelopes maintain they have learned from the defeat and are ready to deny the Eagles a chance to play at the World Cup for the fifth time.

The North-East Africans are also looking to take advantage of the high altitude of their country to pick up home victory and travel to Calabar to defend in the return leg fixture.

But the Tunisia '94 Africa Cup of Nations winner Amokachi on Wednesday dismissed the Walya Antelopes, saying the Eagles would show their class again.

"We have a lot of quality players in Nigeria," the former Everton forward told reporters in Abuja.

"The likes of Emmanuel Emenike, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa and Uche Nwofor are players that can make the difference.

"The good thing is that we work collectively as a team, because if the team is good the strikers will get more passes and score goals."

Meanwhile, Keshi insists the African champions are not under pressure to win in Addis Ababa.

"We are still working with information from the Ethiopian side and we will not be discouraged. We will have to keep our calm, no matter how they try to provoke us.

"Attempts to frustrate the team must happen, because it is the African way of winning a game.

"Sometimes, they bother your life from the airport. We have come through that as a player and now as a coach, but we have to pretend as if it is not happening."

Boko Haram Plans Attack On Sallah Day

As residents of Kano State begin to heave a sigh of relief that the era of bomb explosions is gone, the Joint Task Force (JTF), in the early hours of Monday, uncovered a bomb factory where bombs and other dangerous equipment were being made in preparation for use during the Eid el Kabir and Christmas celebrations.

The son of the owner of the house where the explosives were being manufactured was killed during the JTF operation. He was inside the building between 2-3 a.m. when the operation took place.

He added that the raid, which was conducted following intelligence report, made no arrest as the terrorists fled the village on the approach of the JTF troop and the DSSS, saying that the security operatives did not attempt to attack the terrorists with maximum equipment because they were cautious not to kill innocent citizens.

Abba further hinted that other dangerous equipment recovered from the bomb factory were five motorola hand held radios, four communicators, six alarm clocks, three cartons of eight-volt batteries, one external hard drive and one heavy duty charger/ battery.

Corroborating Brigadier-General Abba, the state DSSS, Bassey Etang, said the son of the owner of the house, who was killed during the operation was found at the scene of the incident at the odd hour (2-3 a.m on Monday), alleging that he must be a member of Boko Haram since he was among those that gave out the building for hire without the knowledge of his father.

While commending the general public for their unflinching support and useful information being given to the security operatives , the state DSS Bassy Etang assured that every information given would be treated with confidentiality

He noted that without the necessary information from member of the public could have not succeeded in tracking the terrorists.

The DSS who disclosed that the very house where the Boko Haram members were uncovered had been demolish in line with the security regulation , noting that owners of house have been warned several times to be wary of who they who gave their building for rent to afford been demolish if found to be hideout of terrorists.

Boko Haram Leader, Mallam Abubakar Shekau Is Dead – JTF

Investigators of the Joint Task Force (JTF) who have been probing the video of the leader of the dreaded Islamic militant sect, Boko Haram, Mallam Abubakar Shekau have rubbished a supposed video of the militant leader, which indicated he was still alive.
A report put together by the team of investigators on behalf of the security agencies said that the investigators have been able to fault the video in “a number of ways.”
Though the real location of the militant leader is yet to be ascertained by the security forces, there was a strong belief in the forces that Shekau was not alive.
Analysis of the last video said to have been made available to authorities indicated that Shekau was cloned.
Sources in the know quoted the report as submitting that Shekau in previous video appearances would start with a recitation of a full verse of the Holy Quran that sometimes could last up to five minutes.

The report indicated that the stand-in Shekau in the video never observed that tradition.
Reports also indicated that in previous occasions, Shekau’s speech was never interrupted by hailing from the background and that the last video had such features.

Investigations by the JTF was also said to have identified that the movement on the lips of the man presented as Shekau in the video did not synchronise with the words he pronounced, an indication according to the report of “a recorded message inefficiently manipulated to sustain a non-existent continuum in leadership.”

The report according to the sources also indicated that following the failure of the alleged attempt to mimic Shekau’s voice in the opening part of the video, alleged stand-in Shekau reverted to his real voice.
“The intonation was different as well as the fact that Abubakar Shekau does not drag his voice,” the analysis further stated.

Is ASUU ready to sacrifice?

The ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities  which has shut our campuses for over three months has seen Nigerian students as the ones mostly affected by the crisis. Some of the lecturers teach in private universities and such have resumed there while the students are left languishing at home. Of particular concern to me however is the sacrifice that ASUU is also willing to pay in this crisis.

Whenever there is a dispute as this, there is usually no winner, it is no victor, no vanquished as all the parties involved must sacrifice something to resolve the crisis. Nigerian students are losing valuable months by sitting idle at home, the Federal Government is also being ridiculed in the public that it has allowed the strike to drag this long, my question then is what is ASUU also ready to sacrifice to see that there is a quick resolution of the crisis?

ASUU cannot play the holier than thou character here because it is part of the rot in the education sector. The lecturers extort money from students, molest our ladies, sit on university panels that recommend expulsion of genuine student activists, and do not show commitment to their work. What then are they ready to part with to atone for the pains that their strike action and unprofessionalism have caused Nigerian students?

ASUU is demanding that its salaries for the months they didn’t step into the classrooms be paid.! They want their own salaries yet they don’t care how long their students languish at home. Are they immune to making sacrifices? It is rather unfortunate.

Players to blame, not Moyes – Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United’s players are to blame for the stuttering start to the season, moving to take the heat off new boss David Moyes.

Rooney has been the shining light of consistency in a United team that have yet to hit top form under Moyes, with the England striker suggesting his team-mates need to step up to the mark in a bid to assist Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

“Obviously the manager is under a bit of pressure and we know as a team it’s us who have let him down,” stated Rooney.

“We have to pull together for the manager and show the sort of fight we have done here and we’ll be fine. We need to do better for him than we have been,”

Rooney went on to heap praise on United’s new teenage hero Adnan Januzaj, after his two-goal salvo at Sunderland handed Moyes a much needed Premier League win on Saturday.

“He’s a great prospect,” added Rooney. “He takes the ball, he runs at players and he’s got great ability.

“It’s great the manager has thrown him into the side, especially with what has happened in the last few games. There was big pressure on us, but the manager has trusted him and he has repaid that.

“He’s very confident, that’s great to see. A lot of the young players who come through are a little bit timid and shy, but he looks comfortable and he’s confident in his own ability, which you need to be.

“It was a brave move to play him in the circumstances and we’re delighted it’s paid off. There is a lot of pressure, but he seems to thrive on it. We know the ability he has got, but you never know how they are going to react when they are thrown into games.

“We need to help the younger players and if we do that, they’ll be moments where they come in and win us the game, as has happened here. The experienced lads need to help them emerge into a team.”

Serena Williams easily dismissed Jankovic in China, to win her 10th title of the year

Serena Williams easily dismissed the challenge of Jelena Jankovic to win the China Open in Beijing, her 10th title of an incredible 2013 season.

Registering her 73rd win of the calendar year, Williams dominated en route to a 6-2 6-2 victory against the former world No. 1.

There was a slight scare for Williams in the second set, as she pulled up clutching her back and was promptly broken by Jankovic. But after Jankovic, bizarrely, took an injury timeout immediately following that break, Williams rattled off five consecutive games to win the China Open for the first time since 2004.

“I’m really excited – I didn’t think I’d win this tournament,” said Williams. “Congratulations to Jelena for such a great tournament as well.

“I really love tennis so much and it’s fans like the ones here in China who are so exciting to come to. The fans make me want to play, and they’re so great here, so coming here is such a great opportunity.”

Agagu crash: LASUTH begins DNA test on victims

The management of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), yesterday said it has started the identification of charred bodies of victims of the ill-fated Associated Airline plane that crashed in Lagos, last Thursday, few minutes after take-off. This is coming as the Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIPB), said it has commenced investigation into the cause of the crash. The aircraft which had on board, 20 passengers and seven crew members was conveying the remains of former governor of Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Agagu to Akure, the Ondo State capital before his final burial in his home town, Iju-Odo.
Recall that relations of victims whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition were asked to come forward for collection of their biological samples for Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test. The hospital’s Chief Examiner and pathologist, Prof. John Obafunwa said the DNA analysis was necessary for proper identification of the corpses.

Family members who reported as early as 8a.m at LASUTH however, could not hide their anger and frustration for being kept in the dark for over six hours about the true situation of things. According to them, the authorities aggravated their pains, accusing them of not being sympathetic about their plight.

Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties, Wale Ahmed, told the bereaved families that the delay was not unconnected with consultations being held by relevant agencies connected with the incident in order to ensure dissemination of correct information.
He further disclosed that results of the test would be ready between three to four weeks based on the information received from the company handling the analysis in the United Kingdom. Ahmed assured the families who were anxious for the release of the remains of their loved ones without the DNA test that victims who were not burnt beyond recognition but have dental records which may be used for identification purposes, could come forward to collect the bodies later.
Meanwhile, dignitaries have been visiting Feyi Agagu, son of late former governor who is on admission at the Intensive Care Unit, LASUTH. Among them were: Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and the Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Folayele Akinkuotu. Condoling with the bereaved, Akinkuotu said that NCAA was doing everything possible to unravel the cause of the crash and prevent future occurrence.

The Chief Operations Officer of the crashed airline, Mr Taiwo Raji revealed that the airline was insured contrary to rumours that the plane was not insured. He said that the airline was still battling with the regulatory framework involved in crashes.

On investigations into the cause of the crash, AIPB commissioner, Capt. Muktar Usman, told journalists that flight recorders of the ill-fated aircraft which was recovered  shortly after the incident, have been downloaded at the Bureau’s newly installed flight laboratory at its Abuja headquarters. He said that experts had started an analysis on the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder. The recorders contain the conversation between the pilot and the control towers. It also reveals what happened inside the aircraft before the crash which are vital.

Missing female lawyer’s body found mutilated in her chambers

ABUJA— Police in Abuja are investigating the suspected murder of a female lawyer, Mrs. Ijeoma Micah, whose lifeless body was found mutilated, yesterday, in her chambers in the highbrow Maitama area of Abuja.

Ijeoma, the owner of Micah and Micah Chambers, was found dead in her office three days after she was said to have gone missing.

Her husband, who it was learnt, arrived from London on Sunday morning, rushed to her office, as it was gathered that he had not heard from her for three days, only to discover her lifeless body.

He reported the matter to Area Command of the police in Maitama.

Contacted on the development, Commissioner of Police FCT, Femi Ogunbayode, said that from investigations, it was discovered that some men had called Ijeoma to her office for some business, which she went for and afterwards, nothing was heard from her.

Ogunbayode told Vanguard that as a result of the killing, a security detail that was attached to Ifeoma was arrested and was being interrogated for alleged complicity.

He said that since the security detail did not report the case to the police until her husband came back from abroad and discovered her body, he was therefore a suspect.

He added that the Forensic Investigation Unit at the FCT Command was already at the office, where she was allegedly killed and had commenced investigation into the matter.

Sympathisers in the area said that the Ifeoma’s husband broke the door of her office and on seeing the lifeless body of his wife, almost killed himself while crying.

It was also gathered that Ijeoma’s car had been missing from the usual parking spot in front of her office building.

Amosun blames delay in salary payment on FG

ABEOKUTA — GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun  of Ogun State,  said partial release of state allocation by the Presidency is responsible for  the delay of the payment of September salary to workers in the state.

Amosun who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa , during the world teachers day held in the state, said  civil servants in the State would start receiving their salary from next week promising not to owe the civil servants any salary despite the challenges.

Speaking, State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Dare Ilekoya urged the  government to address some of the challenges confronting teachers in the State.

Ilekoya lamented what  he described as  irregular and delayed payment of school teachers salaries, non-remittance of co-operative deductions and union dues.

Ilekoya said, “some people  were  engaged by the Federal Govt as a way of creating employment. These teachers have served in the state in the last 24 months and their service expired last month. We believe that the state government should absorb them into the teaching service to address the shortage of teachers.”

He however commended the Amosun administration for timely intervention on regular payment of salaries, implementation of 15 Percent part payment of 27.5 Teachers’ Peculiar Allowance.

President of NUT, Michael Alogba, in the address on his behalf by Grace Faleye, charged the Federal Government not to commit the management of primary education into the hands of local governments.

Tinubu visits crash survivors

Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday visited the survivors of the Associated Aviation crash at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where they are being treated.

The aircraft which was conveying the body of the former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu and some others to Akure crashed on Thursday after taking off in Lagos.

Shortly after landing at the Murtal Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) visited the victims. He was accompanied by his wife Senator Oluremi, the interim spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji and other party stalwarts.

The former Lagos governor spent some time at the ward.

He described the death of the former Ondo State governor as a great loss to the country, describing Agagu as a good man he will miss despite their partisan differences.

He said Nigerians should give thanks to God for sparing the lives of Agagu’s son: Feyi and the son in law in the crash, affirming that government needs to fix the corruption and rot in the aviation sector.

Speaking in an interview on arrival at the airport, he described the crash as a national disaster, and called on the Federal Government to urgently overhaul the aviation sector.

He said until professionals are put in place to oversee the industry, the country may not meet the global standard of aviation it desires.

Rather than put the right personnel and equipment in place including a world standard runway, government he said has used the aviation sector to victimise perceived political enemies , whose aircraft are either grounded or recalled mid air.

He cited examples of the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi and the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Asiwaju said “Agagu was a committed family man. Tunji (Okusanya) was a close friend of every one of us. But God has done one thing, has shown us His wonders. In the midst of all of these, Feyi Agagu survived, his brother in law survived.

“He has given room for us to give thanks to God. Nigeria’s aviation sector is a risk, we have never allowed professionals to run the Aviation industry, and we created too much bureaucracy. Where are the professionals, where are the engineers? What is the age of the plane and the records of maintenance? But when they have already compromised the office, they waste our valuable lives and time.”

He lamented that corruption has crippled the system, as according to him, “We have to remove corruption that is a cancer in our society. We have to remove ethnicity and clannishness in our society; it is a shame on our society.”

Ibori’s undeclared assets: English court has no jurisdiction – Defence

Mr. Ivan Krolic, lead counsel to Chief James Ibori, former governor of Delta State, has told the Southwark, London, court that the British court system lacks the power and jurisdiction to determine and reach a conclusion for Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau on which assets of the former governor to confiscate, over assets declared or undeclared in Nigeria, an independent nation.

The British Crown prosecution, among other allegations, had accused James Ibori of non-declaration or false declaration of his assets as required by Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau, during his time as governor.

As the legal battle in the assets confiscation hearing of the former governor enters its final stage, the British crown prosecution, in their arguments, had asked the British court to confiscate the assets of the former governor as he had breached Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau’s statutory requirements on assets declaration.

The crown’s lead prosecutor, Sasha Wass, asking for the confiscation of every single penny above the sum of Ibori’s emoluments as governor, said: “Every asset over and above that which was declared and which was referable to his level of salary can be shown to be the proceeds of his criminal conduct, namely, fraud and corruption.”

Ibori’s lawyer, Krolic, opposed that argument.

He contended: “Even where there is a legal obligation to make declaration of income or assets, the failure to make any such declaration or making of false declaration (if such exists), cannot cause the property to be confiscated.

“This cannot turn otherwise legitimately acquired assets into criminal property, since this procedure requires the intervention of a third party, Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau.

“And with the unknown outcome of the Bureau’s input, it is not possible for an English court to reach any conclusion about the attitude of Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau to issues as whether und

ASUU BEING FORCED TO END STRIKE

Lagos-based legal practitioner, Daniel Onwe, has dragged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, southern Nigeria, over the lingering crisis between the two bodies which has led to the closure of public universities in the country since 1 July.

In a motion dated 30 September, 2013, Barrister Onwe is seeking an order of court to compel ASUU to call off the strike it embarked upon in protest over the unwillingness of government to implement certain aspects of the agreement they reached over the parlous state of Nigerian universities and other issues.

In a 15-paragraph affidavit filed along with the motion, Onwe is asking the court to declare that the indefinite strike embarked upon by ASUU, leading to the closure of government owned universities for three months, violates the fundamental rights of the students affected.

He argued that the continued strike action by ASUU has traumatized many students who now engage in all sorts of vices.

Onwe posited that the plight of the affected students has worsened as their contemporaries in private universities continue to attend lectures while they remain idle at home.

He urged the court to compel ASUU to open the universities for lectures to resume while their negotiation with the Federal Government continues.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.

Boko Haram Will Be Defeated — US Govt

The United States government has said that Boko Haram will be defeated in Nigeria just as it said that it remained concerned about the security situation in the country. The US added that it would continue to provide necessary supports for the Nigerian government to conquer the people behind the insecurity in the country.

Speaking during a press briefing with journalists at the Department of State in Washington, DC yesterday, spokesperson of the White House Ms. Marie Harf, Deputy said that the United States government would not relent in its efforts to ensure that terrorism was eradicated in Nigeria.

Asked why the United States preferred to assist Nigeria to tackle Boko Haram and abandoned Mali when both countries are facing the same security challenge, Ms. Harf  said: “Well, actually, I think it’s really comparing apples and oranges here, right? Because, as you know, the assistance was cut off to Mali as the result of a specific political situation in the country, that we ended assistance in response to a very specific situation.

“Look, in Nigeria, obviously, we remain deeply committed to helping the Nigerian Government in its fight against Boko Haram. We remain very concerned about ongoing attacks in Nigeria being perpetrated by Boko Haram, and we will continue discussing with Nigerian authorities appropriate steps to counter this group. We will work with the government and we are sure that Boko Haram will be defeated.

“Obviously, if we have issues with reports of things that they’re doing, we will raise those as well. So I think they’re very different situations, but clearly, we are committed to countering the extremist threat wherever it operates around the world”

Just two days ago, the United States and the United Nations had condemned the attack that was made on some students of the College of Agriculture at Gujba local government area of Yobe State on Sunday.

Jen Psaki, a Department of State Spokesperson, who reacted on behalf of the US government said that the United States stood with all Nigerians to reject the heinous violence that continues to be perpetrated by Boko Haram and other extremist groups.

The official continued that those attacks on innocent civilians had no place in a democratic society. He stressed that : “Following last week’s heinous attack in Benisheikh, where more than 160 people were shot and slaughtered, this weekend’s attacks in Yobe state took the lives of more than fifty innocent students and civilians. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in these senseless acts of violence”.

She also urged the government of Nigeria to work together with the families of the victims and affected communities to find and bring those responsible for this deplorable violence to justice, and to enhance the protection of civilians to ensure respect for the rule of law.

In his swift reaction, the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, strongly condemned the murder of more than 40 students and the wounding of several others by gunmen at an agricultural college in Yobe state.
